Why is it impossible to sleep standing up?

The human body is too adaptable for someone to remain still, like a statue. He needs the constant assistance of his muscles, namely those in his legs, as well as muscle receptors and the vestibular apparatus, which alert him to even the slightest deviations from the upright position.

The brain controls coordination of such tasks, but it is unable to do so while you are sleeping, thus if you fall asleep standing up, you will tumble down right away. However, even if you prevent him from falling, say by holding onto him in a crowded area, he will only sleep for a short while.

The majority of the skeletal muscles are almost entirely relaxed during one of the sleep phases known as REM sleep. In such a state, a person will just "flow" to the ground.
